Halloween Family Costume Parade 2012

Have you started thinking about Halloween, yet? It has become a tradition for our family to dress as a group each year. My kids actually LOVE this tradition and through out the year can often be heard suggesting and “casting” a favorite theme. We know what we are doing this year, but the how isn’t so figured out. Thank heavens my miracle worker/seamstress mom is coming to help me work it all out. Do you have any guesses as to what our family will be doing this year? Bonus points if you can figure out who will go as what!

Here is the trip down Halloween amnesia lane for the last nearly 10 years! Hopefully, this may help with your costume decision-making!

2003
This may be the one that started it all! For some reason, my daughter decided she had to be a lamb for Halloween one year. My mother obliged by making her a costume, and before long, my ideas for a family grouping were realized. I am Little Bo Peep. Kira is the Little Lamb and BSB is The Big Bad Wolf.

2004

Kira wanted to be Snow White the following year. My son was less than two months old, so we made him one of the dwarfs. (In this picture he is definitely Sleepy, but he took turns being Grumpy, happy, and most of the other dwarfs, throughout the night). We tacked the beard to the shirt, instead of his face, which worked perfectly since his chin was always down. I am the wicked queen, and my husband is the woodsman.

2005
Then Kira wanted to be Cinderella. (Yeah, she always got her way at the beginning) I found this cute pumpkin costume for my son, and I was the fairy Godmother. (Barry was out of town, so off the hook, this year).

(2006– No family theme.  *GASP* Trenton was a firefighter, and Kira was a princess from India.)

2007
2007 was complicated by the arrival of my baby, Tessa. We ended up with two mini-groupings. My son was an astronaut and my daughter a sassy alien. (It’s about time he got to choose, huh!) I was still in the hospital when they went to the party at church (BIG thanks to my sister for getting them ready!)

2007 (pt. 2)
Tessa and I went to Gourmet Group about a week after she was born, and she had to wear the costume I made for her while I was awaiting her arrival. I went as a gardener and she was my prized peony. Her costume was pretty easy to make. I knitted the hat (easy on a round loom) out of green fuzzy yarn. We bought a onesieand tights and dyed them green, and I bought a giant peony, cut off the stem and stitched it to the cap. Being a gardener is easy if you have a pair of old overalls, gloves and a hat. She was the hit of the party!

2008
In 2008 we did Narnia. Can you tell what we all are? (Except my husband, who tried to claim he was C.S. Lewis… Yeah. I didn’t buy it either.) This grouping was inspired by my daughter telling me she has the face of the white witch. She made a creepy one and my son was excited to carry a sword and serve as the knight in shining armor to all the princesses at the church party. If you can’t tell, I am a lamppost. I put glow in the dark bracelets around my bun, so the lantern did give off some light.

2009
We inherited a really nice Buzz Lightyear costume that my son loved and I knew we could put together Woody and Jesse costumes with out too much trouble (thanks mom for sewing the chaps and the vest). I had plans for pull strings on their backs, but ran out of time. I recycled the Bo Peep costume, borrowing a blond wig this time, and stuffed my pink shirt for my daughter to be Hamm along with the cute hat I found at the craft store.

2010
Building off of the cute clown costume handed down to us from Grandma–which my daughter LOVED–we put together this slightly spooky, sort of vintage French circus grouping for last year. The strong man was a bit of a challenge, but I loved how this grouping came together. If you can’t tell, my husband and baby are supposed to be the ventriloquist and dummy (there isn’t a nicer way to say that, is there?) He (baby) just didn’t always want to wear his wig or chin lines.
The Wizard of Oz Costumes

Family Halloween Costumes-The Wizard of Oz

2011
The Wizard of OZ! This one came about because my mother had made an adorable Dorothy costume for Tessa to use in a play earlier in the year. And we went from there. Although the boys costumes were purchased, there was still a lot of DIYing going on for this grouping–especially Glinda’s costume. You can read more about it and the other ways we tied in our “Oz-some” Wizard of Oz Halloween, here.
Do you know what you are doing for costumes this year? Have you ever done a family or couple grouping? Do you think it is as fun as I do, or not worth the effort? I’d love to hear your guesses as to what our theme will be this year and suggestions for future years!
If you are still in need of some clever Halloween costume ideas, I have been collecting some fabulous and creative ones on my board on pinterest.

  1. I adore homemade family group costumes! This will be our 11th year… if I can come up with an idea! I can’t wait to see you family picture

  2. Woah! I’m really loving the template/theme of this site. It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s very hard to get that “perfect balance” between user friendliness and appearance. I must say you have done a amazing job with this. In addition, the blog loads super quick for me on Firefox. Exceptional Blog!

  3. I LOVE to do theme halloween costumes…sometimes I can convince my children to get on board…I’m trying to lean them all towards a super hero theme this year…we’ll see how it pans out 😉 My DREAM come true happened a couple years ago when I “encouraged” my 4 children to be the 4 seasons! I dressed as Mother Nature, and my less than thrilled husband, said he would wear a watch and be Father Time (that’s really all he would do!) The costumes were so FUN to make…my son was Winter (we based it on Jack Frost in the Santa Clause movie) and it was a HIT!
