Election Night Dinner

You know I don’t talk about politics on this blog–there are enough other places to debate about such things–but I think we all can agree that a presidential election is an important historic event, and a great chance to teach our children about our government and how voting works.

The last presidential election our family threw together this simple dinner while watching the election results come in. I typed up the menu based on what we had available in the house and let them vote for what they wanted. Some patriotic napkins (4th of July clearance) help set the mood.

There are a lot of variations you could do on this theme. You could give the “Ballots” out earlier in the week and surprise your family with the election results that night at dinner. I think my voters were given what they voted for, but a more effective lesson, might be to help them understand how elections work by only serving each item that got the most votes. (I’d probably skip the electoral college for this lesson…)

It’s a fun, easy way, to make sure they understand that something important is going on that day! What do you do to mark election day with your kids?

What in the world is candy corn soda?

    • Ha Ha! Like I said, I used what we had on hand. It was a seasonal offering from our grocery store that we had picked up for Halloween and still had around at election time. Not a typical menu item for most, I suppose. 🙂

  3. Great idea! Great blog too!

  4. This is such a fun idea and totally reminds me of something my mom would have done for us as kids. Love it!
