"She’s About to POP!"–the coolest baby shower ever!

She's about to pop baby shower
We’re in the middle of full scale Easter preparations around here (report to come next week). But my sister finally sent me pictures of what the mom-to-be called the “coolest baby shower ever!” This is not a party I hosted. I didn’t have to make the cake pops, or mail the invitations. I didn’t even get to attend. (If I had I would have taken more pictures!) My sister, Shanda, threw this party, but I do take a little credit since we spent a lot of time on the phone together brainstorming ideas, and I designed the invitations and labels and emailed them to her. I had seen some fun ideas about using popcorn at a baby shower with the theme, “She’s about to Pop.” We decided to take it a step further and turn it into a full scale POP party!
INVITATIONS:

I designed these flower shapes with the party information. Shanda printed them on bright cardstock and stuck a Tootsie Roll Pop in the middle. (Blow Pops would be cute, too).
UPDATE:Here are some templates that might work for your invitations!

DECORATIONS:

Shanda decked out her house with hand-cut circles in lots of fun colors. It was time consuming, but was an inexpensive way for high impact decoration.
I found a few sites on line where you can create pop art from your own photos. (We used this one.) Shanda uploaded a photo of the mama-to be, and we displayed this “pop art”—labeled, just incase anyone didn’t get it.

FOOD:

We had a lot of fun coming up with food ideas. A popcorn bar (butter, cheese, kettle, and caramel flavors), Bakerella’s cake pops, pop tarts, and Popsicles. We thought of a few other options: popcorn shrimp, and bubble gum. And of course, she had lots of colorful soda pop. I made labels to cover each bottle.

FUN:

She played 80’s Pop music, and they played a relay race where you had to pop balloons. (I’ll have her fill in the details on that one). This was not your formal tea-sipping event. But the word from all who attended was that it was a blast! If you are looking for a fun and light-hearted theme for a baby shower, this might work for you, and just to make it easier, I have uploaded some of the labels I created. Let me know if you end up using them!
Happy Easter, everyone!

Update:  I’ve added some invitation downloads here.  I hope you enjoy!
UPDATE: 5-29-2014: I filmed a TV segment featuring some of these ideas and posted the segment on this post. Also, I know Scribd can be a bit finicky about downloading this files, so the new post has more accessible links to updated printables for this party theme. Enjoy!

    1. Where can I find out more on the games they played? I haven’t heard of the balloon popping relay one and id love to add that one to our shower planned this weekend. Looking for other games and prize ideas too.

  1. What a darling idea. Wish I had seen this before I started to buy things for the shower I’m giving. You have the best ideas and your labels are to die for.

Do you have any ideas I can use? I’m giving a baby shower with a bird/nest theme. The colors are blue and brown as the mommy is having a boy.

How did you make those cute labels? I would love some for this shower with the bird/nest theme. I just have no idea how to make them.

    Hugs,
    Joanne

  2. This is way creative, I’ve never heard of this theme before! Thanks for sharing, I’ll be linking to this in an upcoming Baby Shower Roundup.

  3. Talk about insanity, I know someone who is pregant and just seeing this cute idea makes me want to call right now and see if anyone is throwing her a shower yet, and so I can volunteer and do this!! Mind you I am moving in two months and have a house to sell, but this looks like too much fun!! Thanks for spreading the insanity around! 🙂

  5. Thanks everyone! Thanks Michelle for weighing in! Now they know I’m not making it up. Best wishes with your new little one!

Crystal, you sound just like me. I get excited about an idea and look for an excuse to use it. Then I wonder why I signed myself up for so much work! 🙂

Thanks, Rachel, I’d love the link!

    1. OMG this is the cutest baby shower idea ever!!!! I love IT!!!!! I’m actually exspecting my 2nd lil one in March and I had official decided to use this as my base plan….do you have any other ideas? I especially love the label and intend on using those to!!!!

  6. Kendra, this is waaay cute! Love the theme and the circles hanging from the ceiling are so simple but make such an impact!

  7. Well it looks like my staying up till 2am the night before (when my two kids under two were asleep because my husband was out of town) was worth it. I am glad everyone (especially Michelle, the guest of honor) liked my party! It really was fun and easy once I was inspired by the theme. And Kendra thanks for all your help. You are a great big sister!

  8. LOVE this shower theme! We are totally going to use it for a friend who is due this summer! Thanks for this fun idea! Any suggestions on sending the invites with the blow pop in the middle? I’m thinking photo mailers or something?

  9. This was my original shower theme as well. I think it’s super cute. Instead of going all crazy with popcorn the new theme is “Now Showing” and it’s gonna be chock full of theatre style goodies.

  10. Thanks so much for the great idea! I downloaded the invitations for a shower for my sister-in-law and I am so excited, I think that it is going to be a ton of fun. Oh, another idea that we came up with for food-in New Mexico we love Jalapeno Poppers, and we also thought about serving Poppy Seed Muffins. Thanks for the help-love your blog!

  11. this is a really neat idea!! Im due in april, and my friend is throwing me a baby shower in march, and the only thing i get to do is pick the theme… Could you tell me what some of the lables were for, and how the pop cake was made? i would appreciate it. my email is ange_robson@yahoo.com

  12. ange-Sorry, I didn't respond sooner. I think the only labels that I didn't write about are for "pop-tarts," and "popsicles." There was also '80s pop music.

For the cake pops, visit http://www.bakerella.com. She has instructions for these.

    Nicole,
I don't think invitations were mailed, they were hand delivered. I think you could do it with a small mailing tube, if you folded the petals inward, and the recipient opened the tube from the stick end. A little pricy, but fun.

  13. I love this idea! I just voluntered today to throw my first baby shower, and now I already have it planned!!! Hurrah thanks so much for the fantastic ideas. The only question I have is how did you print around the edge of your invite? I would like to do that and can't figure out how thanks so much!!! 🙂

  14. What a fun idea! I'm looking for some baby shower ideas for a friend and this caught my eye. And then I did a double take when I read my name- there aren't that many women named Shanda out there! (I think I've met 4 in my life).

    Thanks for sharing!

    Shanda 🙂

  15. This is an awesome theme! I will be using it for an upcoming baby shower that I will help plan. I love the font you used for the "POP" in popsicles, cake pops and in your pictures. Can you tell me how you got those fonts?

Thank you for posting this awesome theme!

  16. I love the ready to pop theme and the flower and tootsie roll design. I am pregnant with my first child and I am planning for my baby shower. I am not creative but I would love to replicate the flower design and know how you printed the details on the flower. Any information and specific directions, details you are willing to share with me, I would truly appreciate.

    Thank you in advance, Latisha

    1. I need instructions on how to print the details on the flower. I love this idea and I need to find out how to print them also. Thanks in advance for your help.

      1. Thank you ladies for your interest in the invitations. Designing the flowers the way I did with the text going around, can be kind of tricky. You have to have the right kind of software (like photoshop)that uses layers and then you’d create a text path around the shape of the flower. It would be difficult to tell you exactly how to do it, since I don’t know what software you have and it took me a bit of trial and error to get it right.

Because I knew that would be difficult for many, I created some blank templates and posted them here: http://meandmyinsanity.com/2009/04/by-request-shes-about-to-pop-invitation.html

They don’t go around the edges like mine did, but they still maintain the flower shape and would be easy to add your info. Good luck with your parties!

  17. Hello, I’m planning on doing a baby shower for myself on August, i was browsing some ideas and came across this one, it’s amazing! Super adorable and creative! I had a couple of questions though, what did she do for center pieces? And what about her cake did she have any? I’d appreciate it if you reply asap.

    thank you,
    Nidia
