Baby Update – 1 month old

baby-2733

Wow! It has already been more than a month since this little man joined our family. We are so in love with him and excited that he is smiling and becoming more interactive each day. He is well-loved by his siblings and so many family and friends. We are so grateful to have him in our lives!

I have to tell you, though, that with this being child number 5, I thought I would know what to expect. I’m feeling much better than I did when I was pregnant, but we have entered a completely foreign realm this time that has thrown me for quite a loop.  I tend to have big babies that grow quickly. At his one-month check-up our little man came in at the 97th percentile for height and the 23rd for weight. This was after a couple of days where we didn’t do much of anything besides focus on his weight gain. My other four children were all always around the 95th percentile for both height and weight. He is just now about back to his birth weight–the others having re-gained their birth weight before they were 1 week old.

I’ve started writing a post called “When Breastfeeding Sucks” that outlines why he is having a hard time. I decided to write the post to explain our challenges and all I am learning, in the hope that it might help others struggling with similar experiences. I’m not ready to publish it, yet, however, because it seems like each time we make progress, we have another set-back, so the story isn’t over.  Thankfully, in most other regards he seems to be a healthy kid, so I know we have a lot to be grateful for, but as parents we want to see our children thriving, so it is hard when things don’t go as planned.

In the meantime, the feeding of my skinny guy is my main occupation/full-time job. And now that school has started, I don’t have a lot of big helpers around to assist me anymore. I will be blogging as I can, but have not been able to spend much time answering emails, etc, and will have to let somethings slide for a while as we make adjustments.

These pictures give you a glimpse of the nursery decor, that I have yet to stage, photograph and blog about–but I will someday! I also have some new baby products I am excited to share with you, and quite a few parties still to publish. But all in good time.

If you want more insanity in your life now, I do a lot of “micro-blogging” on Instagram–my current favorite social media outlet! You can keep tabs on me there.

Thanks for all of your love, support, and understanding! baby-2743

  1. He’s darling. Oh gosh those eyes! They are heart stealers. 🙂
With the breastfeeding issues…Have you had him checked to see if he is tongue tied? My niece was and they didn’t discover it until she had gotten dehydrated but just knew she had a hard time nursing.

    • Thanks! I think he’s pretty cute! 🙂

He actually has had his tongue tie procedure done already. Sadly, that is only part of the equation with his mouth. So we are still working on it. I never knew it could be so complicated. :-/

  2. Congrats! My first had poor suck/swallow, reflux, and was a high needs feeder- managed to gain weight. My youngest was a preemie, and very slow to grow. Both were breastfed- but it was a fulltime job.
Do what is best, not only for your baby, but you and your family. Take care, and it is hard when simply latching on is not the only key to successful breastfeeding.

  3. Oh my goodness! I can’t get over how adorable he is. His eyes are just beautiful. I’ve had 2 kids and both were VERY tiny. My youngest was in the FIFTH percentile as an infant and as a toddler got up to the 15th percentile. haha.. I guess that’s what happens when you’re born full term weighing in at 5lbs 7 oz ha.

    • Thanks, Edna! Wow, 5 lbs. 7 oz, is tiny! My smallest was 8 lbs 5oz, and my biggest was 9 lbs. 8 oz., so you can see why having a smaller one is freaking me out a little. He was plenty big at birth, just hasn’t plumped up since then, but we are still working on it. After his last weight check last week he had gained a couple of percentile points (25th instead of 23rd) so we are working on it. But skinny or chubby, he’s still pretty sweet and cute!

  4. HEY KENDRA, CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR NEW BUNDLE OF JOY HES SUCH A CUTIE. ME AND MY MOM WERE TALKING LAST NIGHT ABOUT OUR OLD WARD FRIENDS WHICH WAS ON SATURDAY AUGUST 24, 2014 NANCY PHELPS MOVED BACK TO ARIZONA FROM OKLAHOMA AND WAS TELLING US THAT SIS. ADAIR HAD PASSED AWAY NOT TO LONG AGO. THATS WHEN I STARTED THINKING ABOUT YOU AND TAMARA AND YOUR KIDS. YOUR DAUGHTER HAS GOTTEN SO GROWN UP I SAW PICTURES OF HER. TELL HER I SAID HI AND HOPING YOUR FAMILY IS WELL. TAKE CARE. THE ELSBERRY FAMILY.
